Understanding the Interface

As used here, interface is the point of communication or interaction between user and computer. We'll look mainly at the desktop of the Linux workstations.

Right Shelf

The Dock

The bottom shelf, called the dock in Mac OS, contains icon shortcuts to applications most often used. These are customized and optimized according to username. Below are some of the icons you might see. Not all appear for every username. However, (left) clicking anywhere on the desktop where a window is not open will bring up all applications (see "access it all" below).

Access It All

(Left) clicking anywhere on the desktop where a window is not open will bring up all applications. Some version of what you see below will appear. Everything is literally at your fingertips. You can also logout by choosing System -> Log Out. (If you happen to click at the right of the screen you may not see all options because of lack of space. In this case, after clicking moving the mouse toward the right over the menu will adjust this).
