Library State of the Art Computing Systems
Most of the workstations use state of the art BodhiLinux systems. BodhiLinux is an open source community based minimalist operating system (OS) embodying elegant simplicity. One great benefit of BodhiLinux is the way aging computers that would otherwise be recycled are given new life, capable of running completely modern apps and programs effectively.
The purpose of a minimalist system is to get the job done simply and effectively. For people used to working with Mac OS or Windows, the idea of minimalism may require a little getting used to. Many operating systems compete to come out of the box complete with just everything anyone could possibly want and way more just in case. While convenient, this "everything" uses up system resources and can become bloated and sluggish with time. A minimalist system on the other hand starts more from scratch, adding functionality or extra bells and whistles on an as need basis. This helps make for a speedy and efficient system even on older computers, one that doesn't slow down or get clogged up over time.
BodhiLinux adds elegance to this equation. There are many customizable options available to make working on BodhiLinux an elegant and aesthetic experience, something many people find ergonomically beneficial.
The iMac
There is an iMac, a completely modern computer, our newest and finest and one of the finest computers to be found anywhere. While the iMac can do pretty much anything the other computers can do, priority should be given to those needing it for graphic creation, video editing, and accessibility issues, as its more powerful and modern hardware make the iMac a better choice for these demanding tasks. For example, someone wanting to watch YouTube, something that can be done on any computer, should yield the iMac to an individual needing it for accessibility issues. The iMac's built-in webcam makes it the choice for video conferencing. Being an Apple computer also makes it the choice for Apple related functions, such as syncing iPads, accessing iCloud or iTunes University.
Quiet
Libraries have always been associated with quiet. The library offers headphones for listening that can be used on all computers ~ iMac, BodhiLinux Work Stations, and iPads.
Donations
Time is not kind to computer equipment and replacements are always appreciated. If you know of a computer, headphones, or relevant equipment sitting around unused, such donations will be put to positive use.
